Motorola Razr 5G Launch Expected at Company’s September 9 Event

Motorola has officially started sending out ‘save the dates’ that suggest that a new smartphone launch is scheduled to take place on September 9. The company has sent out media invites for the virtual launch event, but hasn’t revealed the name of the device. The teaser video by Motorola suggests that it has plans to launch Motorola Razr 5G on the mentioned date. The tagline “flip the smartphone experience again” with a subtle ‘flipping’ in the teaser, tells us that its the Razr we should be expecting next month.

A GIF teasing the new launch has been released by Motorola that suggests some design similarities with the Motorola Razr (2019). The Motorola Razr 5G is rumored to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 SoC. This is unlike the existing foldable phone that has a Snapdragon 710 chip, coupled with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.

Motorola Razr 5G specifications (Expected)

The Motorola Razr 5G is rumored to retain the 6.2-inch flexible display that was available on last year’s foldable phone. The phone is also expected to run on Android 10 with a few proprietary features designed by Motorola, including the retro mode. Further, the new handset is said to come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 SoC, paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage.

The camera department could also see an improvement with a 48MP main camera and a 20MP selfie one. There might be a 6.2-inch main display and a secondary display too, much like the Motorola Razr (2019). However, price and availability details aren’t known yet. The smartphone is also speculated to have a 2,845mAh battery and 18W fast charging.

Qualcomm Antitrust Ruling Reversed by US Appeals Court

By Reuters | Updated: 12 August 2020

A US appeals court on Tuesday reversed a lower court ruling against chip supplier Qualcomm in an antitrust lawsuit brought by the Federal Trade Commission.

The US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals also vacated an injunction that would have required Qualcomm to change its intellectual property licensing practices.

The decision was a major vindication for the San Diego-based company, the largest supplier of chips for mobile phones and a key generator of wireless communications technology.

Qualcomm was fighting a May 2019 decision by US District Judge Lucy Koh in San Jose, California. Koh sided with the FTC, writing that Qualcomm’s practice of requiring phone makers to sign a patent license agreement before selling them chips “strangled competition” and harmed consumers.

But the appeals court, in a 3-0 ruling written by Circuit Judge Consuelo Callahan, ruled that Qualcomm had no duty to license its patents to rival chip suppliers and that it was not anticompetitive to require phone makers to sign a license agreement.

“Instead, these aspects of Qualcomm’s business model are ‘chip-supplier neutral’ and do not undermine competition in the relevant antitrust markets,” Callahan wrote.

Qualcomm praised the decision while the FTC called it “disappointing.”

“The Court of Appeals unanimous reversal, entirely vacating the District Court decision, validates our business model and patent licensing program and underscores the tremendous contributions that Qualcomm has made to the industry,” Don Rosenberg, Qualcomm’s general counsel, said in statement.

The FTC’s Bureau of Competition director, Ian Conner, said in a statement, that the agency “will be considering our options.”

The case divided US antitrust regulators with the Justice Department intervening to file a brief in support of Qualcomm.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Qualcomm shares rose about 4 percent on the news. The shares have been up from March lows as the company continued to show growth despite a sluggish smart phone market.

Qualcomm had argued that the FTC decision, if allowed to stand, would upend its business model by requiring it for the first time to license its technology to rival chipmakers and rework many of its patent licensing deals with phone makers.

Qualcomm won a pause in enforcement of the decision while its legal appeal played out and voluntarily changed how it structured some of its licensing deals for 5G technology. With the appeals victory and raft of new agreements signed with customers since the case was decided, Qualcomm is largely clear to resume conducting business as it had for decades before the FTC case.

Qualcomm’s business model often prompted conflict with phone makers, most notably Apple, which supported the FTC’s case and mounted a separate antitrust lawsuit against Qualcomm.

The phone makers bristled at Qualcomm’s insistence that manufacturers license its broad patent portfolio regardless of whose chips they chose.

Apple settled its case against Qualcomm in 2018 and signed a license deal and chip supply agreement. Other major phone makers such as Samsung Electronics and Huawei Technologies have also settled disputes with the chip supplier and signed license deals since the FTC case was decided.

Nokia Phone Maker HMD Global Secures $230 Million Investment From Google, Others

By Reuters | Updated: 12 August 2020

HMD Global, the maker of Nokia-branded smartphones, has secured $230 million (roughly Rs. 1,719 crores) of investment from partners including Google, Qualcomm, and Nokia Technologies, to help accelerate its development of 5G devices.

Chief Executive Florian Seiche said the success of the funding round – the largest since the Finland-based company was founded in late-2016 – validated its strategy of working closely with partners in software and hardware.

“This significant investment with some of closest strategic partners really allows us to accelerate our journey going forward,” he said in an interview.

He did not disclose the individual amounts, but said the investments from the three were “each very sizeable parts of the total”.

HMD’s smartphones run Google’s Android One software, an unadulterated version of the operating system (OS) that promises three years of security updates and two years of OS updates.

“Google is delivering a similar experience on its own Pixel range, and we are a perfect complement to their own initiatives,” Seiche said. “They’re focused on fewer selected geographies and channels; we are much broader and also present in emerging markets.”

HMD’s first 5G device – the Nokia 8.3 5G – goes on sale next month, and Seiche said the investment would accelerate HMD’s development of 5G handsets at lower prices.

“We believe the second half of this year will see a broader set of 5G phones in the market, and we believe the true mid-tier range will probably be in the first half of next year,” he said.

HMD would also continue to invest in low-priced feature phones, he said, and deepen its relationships with carriers in markets in Africa, India, and Brazil.

Seiche said COVID-19 had impacted sales, but demand had “come back quite strongly” in May and June, and the company had returned to profitability in June.

Huawei Says Flagship HiSilicon Kirin Smartphone Chips Running Out Under US Sanctions

By Reuters | Updated: 8 August 2020

Huawei Technologies will stop making its flagship Kirin chipsets next month, financial magazine Caixin said on Saturday, as the impact of US pressure on the Chinese tech giant grows.

US pressure on Huawei’s suppliers has made it impossible for the company’s HiSilicon chip division to keep making the chipsets, key components for mobile phone, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Unit was quoted as saying about the upcoming the launch of the company’s new Mate 40 handset at an industry conference, China Info 100. A report by Chinese publication IT Home cites the Yu to say Huawei Mate 40 will still sport a flagship Kirin SoC.

With US-China relations at their worst in decades, Washington is pressing governments around to world to squeeze Huawei out, arguing it would hand over data to the Chinese government for spying. Huawei denies it spies for China.

The United States is also seeking the extradition from Canada of Huawei’s chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, on charges of bank fraud.

In May the US Commerce Department issued orders that required suppliers of software and manufacturing equipment to refrain from doing business with Huawei without first obtaining a license.

“From Sept. 15 onward, our flagship Kirin processors cannot be produced,” Yu said, according to Caixin. “Our AI-powered chips also cannot be processed. This is a huge loss for us.”

Huawei’s HiSilicon division relies on software from U.S. companies such as Cadence Design Systems Inc or Synopsys to design its chips and it outsources the production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), which uses equipment from US companies.

Huawei declined comment on the Caixin report. TSMC, Cadence and Synopsys did not immediately respond to email requests for comment.

HiSilicon produces a wide range of chips including its line of Kirin processors, which power only Huawei smartphones and are the only Chinese processors that can rival those from Qualcomm in quality.

“Huawei began exploring the chip sector over 10 years ago, starting from hugely lagging behind, to slightly lagging behind, to catching up, and then to a leader,” Yu was quoted as saying. “We invested massive resources for R&D, and went through a difficult process.”
