Next Redmi phone to support for ISRO NavIC satellite navigation, could be Redmi Note 9 Pro

It has started raining smartphones in India and Xiaomi is among the top phone makers to start coming up with new phones. The Redmi 8A Dual was the first launch for the Redmi sub-brand and the next one will be happening soon. Xiaomi was in talks with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) earlier this year over bringing the space agency’s NaVIC navigation system to its lineup of smartphones. Manu Kumar Jain, Managing Director of Xiaomi India, has now announced that the next Redmi-branded phone set to launch in India will offer NaVIC support. The Xiaomi executive added that the upcoming Redmi phone will also be the first in the world to feature NaVIC positioning system. However, the model name of Xiaomi’s upcoming phone remains under the covers as of now.

Mr. Jain tweeted a photo of himself with ISRO Chairman, Dr. K Sivan, who spearheaded India’s Chandrayaan-2 mission. After holding talks with ISRO back in January, Xiaomi confirmed it will be one of the first brands to launch a phone powered by the newly launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC, which happens to offer NaVIC support.

Given that March is approaching soon, Xiaomi might be preparing to launch the next version of the Redmi Note series. Chances are that the Redmi Note 9 and Redmi Note 9 Pro might launch soon, and both these phones are going to get support for the new NavIC navigation system. The Redmi Note 9 Pro could use the Snapdragon 720G chipset whereas the regular Redmi Note 9 may rely on the Snapdragon 662.

As for NaVIC, it is the operational name of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). ISRO claims IRNSS was created for terrestrial, aerial and marine navigation, disaster management, vehicle tracking, and fleet management, as well as integration with mobile phones. NaVIC will provide a position accuracy of 20 metres (or less) in primary service areas.

Xiaomi Mi 10 is undeniably the most anticipated smartphone in India. It will be the first device in the country to launch with a massive 108MP camera sensor. Xiaomi’s Managing Director Manu Kumar Jain has confirmed that the Mi 10 will launch in India on March 31. The India launch event of the Xiaomi Mi 10 will kick off at 12:30 PM. The company has revealed the launch will be live-streamed via Xiaomi’s social media channels. Ahead of the official launch, the company has also revealed pre-order offers.

Customers pre-ordering the Mi 10 in India between March 31 and April 7 will receive an instant discount of Rs. 2,500 on Axis Bank credit cards and EMI transactions, the microsite revealed. Similarly, there will be an instant discount of Rs. 2,000 on purchases made through Axis Bank debit cards and EMI transactions.

Mi 10 Price in India

The Mi 10 price in India is yet to be revealed. However, Xiaomi Vice President and India Managing Director Manu Kumar Jain earlier this week confirmed that there would be a different pricing model over what was announced in China last month due to direct import, higher GST, and depreciating rupee. The Mi 10 price in China starts at CNY 3,999 (roughly Rs. 42,400).

Xiaomi Mi 10 Highlights

Xiaomi has officially confirmed that Mi 10 phones will bear a 108MP sensor led rear camera setup. Xiaomi seems quite pumped about this sensor. So much so that, it has been part of Xiaomi India’s official twitter account name. The only other 108MP camera phone currently available in India is Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra that hit retail shelves last month.

The Mi 10 comes with a 108-megapixel primary camera (F1.6 aperture) paired with an 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 2-megapixel telephoto camera, and a 2-megapixel depth camera.

Xiaomi’s Mi 10 flagship houses a 6.67-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen with curved edges. The screen has a 90Hz refresh rate. Xiaomi has already confirmed Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset with 5G modem for the Indian market as well. Xiaomi is likely to also offer a Mi 10 variant without 5G antennas similar to recently launched iQOO 3 (review). Xiaomi could offer MI 10 in India with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.
